Kitchen Tips, things to consider
- What do you not like about your current kitchen?
- Create a "wish list" for your new kitchen, and then number the items in order of importance.
- What items (i.e.: cabinetry, flooring) do you want to put the most money into?
- If necessary, what items are you willing to save $ on?
- Adequate food storage - Do you go food shopping once a week or every few days?
- Kitchen lighting - Even if there is adequate general lighting, the counter areas can be dark and hard to work in. Having under-cabinet lighting should be an essential part of the cabinet design and layout.
- What about an Island - For an island to add function as well as style, it should be no more than 42 inches from the main counters.
- How to measure for Kitchen cabinets. Are you planning for a new home? Do you need a layout design that will accommodate replacing your existing Kitchen PLUS add or removing walls?
With so many things to consider about planning and styling your new room, you may require a little assistance. You have probably realized by now that you can't go it alone. You'll need the help of a kitchen and/or bathroom professional.
Bath Room Design Tips
Redecorating or Restructuring?
The biggest costs involved in home improvements is usually the labor, and since restructuring involves many hours of professional work, these projects are more expensive than simply redecorating.
Accessories
If a bathroom fixture is structurally sound, it is much better for our environment to continue to use it rather than to trash it. However if keeping that older bathtub is no longer appealing in the finished bathroom, it may be time to get rid of it. Tubs and showers and surrounds are all difficult to replace after a major renovation is complete, so you have to decide in advance whether it’s time to get rid of them or not.
Floors
If you’re remodeling a bathroom it makes sense to replace the flooring. If your bathroom is carpeted (an unbelievable trend several years ago), you should always replace it. However, hardwood and tile floors are extremely durable and can often be refinished or regrouted to look new again.
Flooring Tips
Tile
For a dramatic touch on a floor expanse in the kitchen, add a border to a field of plain tile. Layout the interior tiles on a 45 degree angle, and surround the border with tiles set squarely.
Stone
Whatever tile you choose, carefully consider the grout color. Matching the tile color creates a smoother more expansive look. Contrasting colors add dimension and character.
Hardwood
Consider an inlaid pattern, a combination of light and dark planks or an unusual species.
